Grand Canyon Skywalk Opens to First Visitors*

They did it. Members of the Hualapai Indian Tribe opened their $30 million horseshoe-shaped eco-travesty transparent walkway over the rim of the Grand Canyon today. As we’ve noted before, the Skywalk extends 70 feet beyond the canyon’s rim, allowing paying visitors to peer 4,000 feet down past their toes into the canyon. Today, invited guests—including, oddly, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who called it “magnificent”—gave it a try. The Skywalk opens to the general public March 28. We can, uh, hardly wait.

I visited the Skywalk last week with some friends that were visiting Las Vegas. It is worth the time and money to see the area. The Skywalk will make it even better. We got to see the Skywalk project but it was not open yet. It does NOT take anything away from the Land, nor does it look bad. They did a VERY good job. I can not wait to go back and walk on it. I suggest it to anyone visiting Las Vegas. You can drive there like we did or you can take a tour bus from Las Vegas and you also get to see the Hoover Dam on the trip. Very Fun day trip.

“environmentalists have blamed the tribe for transforming the majestic canyon into a tourist trap.”
Funny. Have these people been to the South Rim village lately? I think they should redirect their anger at the National Park Service.
